King Cashalot is one of the earliest Microgaming progressive slots, launched in 2004. You are immersed in a medieval feast at the royal palace, hosted by the King. You hear the buzz of the conversation. You see the meal and the other guests in attendance spread out on the reels. Time to win a lot of cash! This progressive video slot, with 5 reels and 9 paylines, may be not the coolest kid in school in terms of graphics or sound effects, but its longevity, and the size of its jackpot, speaks for itself. Somebody needs to win the grand prize. Why not you? Check out this oldie but goodie at once of our recommended casinos:
How to play
First decide how much you want to bet. You choose how many coins and the number of paylines you want to play. Since the coin value is fixed at £0.05, and you should bet on all 9 lines, that means minimum bet is £0.45 per spin. If your eyes are set on the jackpot, then go for the max bet. Bet the maximum of 5 coins and all 9 paylines, for a total of £2.25 per spin – it’s not exactly dirt cheap but a chance at the huge jackpot plus all the “small” wins on the way should get your adrenaline pumping!
The main symbols can be divided into two groups: people and food. The people are:
- King Cashalot is by far the most important symbol. He is a wild and can substitute for any other symbol except the scatter to create winning combinations. If he substitutes for another symbol, the winnings are doubled. And best of all: 5 of a kind at max bet can win you the jackpot!
- The Queen
- The Knight
- The Damsel
Lower payout symbols are foods.
- The green jester is a multiplier who can increase winnings up to 50x.
- Three golden dragons on the middle reels will trigger the treasure bonus.
Let’s face it. The King Cashalot slot does not have a high payout percentage. In fact, its RTP is an anaemic 91%, well below average for slots these days. However, this high volatility progressive slot is deservedly famous for its jackpot, which starts in the high hundreds of thousands and often goes into the millions. Bear in mind that you must bet the maximum 2.25 to qualify and you need to get 5 kings in a row on the 9th payline of the main game. The jackpots seeds at £100,000 and the average win is over a half million pounds, with the highest win over a million and a half pounds. There is a big winner about once a year.
The mobile version is in flash, which means it doesn’t run on iOS devices. It’s not clear whether Microgaming intends to update this old timer into the HTML5 language so it can run in all mobile browsers.
King Cashalot was one of the first slots to feature a bonus game: the Treasure Bonus. When golden dragons appear in the middle 3 reels, you get a second screen, where winnings are multiplied by your initial bet and added to your payline payout.
Graphics and Sounds
The graphics and sounds here are definitely old school: illustrative drawing in pastel colors. Not unpleasant and you can charitably call it retro. There are some sequences that pass for animation, but let’s charitably say that animation has sure improved in the last decade. You’re not in King Cashalot for the pretty pictures. You’re in it for the big money!
There are lots more flashy video slots than this one. There are also a lot more slots that have a higher payout percentage. But there are not a lot that consistently deliver jackpots like the good King Cashalot. When you play in his palace, you are in it not for the food, and not for the company, but for the cash in that jackpot. So keep that possibility in mind, play max bet to qualify and – who knows? – you may be the next big winner of this King’s ransom. Take your chance at one of our recommended casinos:
